I thought this was a very well written book and handled the subject of slavery well. Unfortunately, I found it very hard to relate to the lead character and this did spoil the story for me. We know some things about him, his loyalty, his morals but I didn't feel that I got inside his head to understand him as a person.
Worth a read as it is well written though.

I could have easily devoured this book in a couple of days but needed regular breaks to come to terms with what I was reading? It’s heavy. I cried for Cinnamon and her Mama, for Tad and Amelia and her maid, Jamaica Mary, Moses and the other tragic characters in this book. Shepherd-Robinson is a master at creating fully fleshed-out characters and mysteries that leave me reeling β€” I was hooked from the first chapter. I will be reading Daughters of the Night very soon, and likely every book the author writes after that!
