First, I have to say I love the Chinese representation blended with one of my favorite genres. This is in the third person. It is third person close from Cara’s perspective and has a classic hero’s journey arc with enemies to lovers vibes. However, what I enjoyed even more than the angst, the growth of the main character, and the exciting adventure is the beautiful prose in this book. If you’re a writer, some of these lines are gonna make you downright jealous that you didn’t think of them. Example: “What was a group of gone beasts called? A stillness. An extinction.“ I won’t spoil any more of the beautiful descriptions.

This was okay but it wasn't my favourite read! I could see it being something that could blow up with teens because of the characters being more appealing to a slightly younger audience. I think the adventure in the story was creative and done well but I just didn't click with the main characters it was too teen romance for me to get any real enjoyment from it.

I wanted to love this one, but I found some of the tonal shifts akward. The book is trying to be so many things at once, and each of those things is engagingly written, but the pieces don't quite fit together smoothly.
