What a wonderful hook to a story, and what a great example of "I know how this is going to end but I'm excited for the fun while getting there." Perhaps a bit too much explaination of the science in parts, as near the end of the book I ended up tuning it out a bit. However, if you're as interested in space as I am you'll likely still find it interesting, and a charming sci-fi style, since you can learn some things and explore other concepts.
I was so in love with Rocky, and I choose to read the queer subtext and headcanon Rocky and Grace were in love, too. The imagery of Grace hurtling toward the blackness of Rocky's ship because the starlight couldn't reach it in order to save his life was extreme poetic beauty. The idea that an entire planet came together to keep this human alive and he used it to teach again I'm getting emotional.
This book is about the terror of natural disaster, and the incomprehensible ingenuity and compassion that life will exert to overcome the fear of death and save itself. An uplifting tale for those who enjoy a bit of realism in their fantasy.

Rocky ❤️

I really enjoyed this book. It is definitely slow-paced for a majority of the book but ultimately worth it. Whoever says it’s medium or fast paced is lying. I like the ending, but was a little disappointed. This was my first serious, sci-fi novel and I look forward to reading more. I’m going to read The Martian next.

Also those putting suicide as a content warning on here are incorrect. Look at info under my content warnings that goes into greater detail.

I would’ve liked a bit deeper character development for Grace, although it would likely have interfered with the pacing a bit.

“The sun is dying” is a crazy premise for a sci-fi novel but this book executed it so so well. I was surprised by how quickly Weir was able to establish the problem and get the plot rolling, especially bc of how complex and detailed the science was. I did think a lot of this was far fetched and best case scenario-y, but it made for an overall wholesome story about the indomitable human spirit and the universal nature of friendship and love.
Also this is just a me thing, but Stratt was the most compelling character in this book and I need a story about her life on Earth after the book starts. Although I think that book would be a fundamentally different genre, I’d read tf out of that book. Or even a story about Rocky prior to meeting Grace bc Rocky was the best part of this story.

This book has it all: loveable and relatable characters, witty dialogue (internal and external), an engaging storyline, and a gripping writing style, all with digestible but real science! Highly recommend for soft-hearted scifi nerds :)

This was a surprisingly heartwarming story about friendship, and self discovery. It’s all about the journey, not the destination, you know?

I’d only ever read Artemis from this author, so I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy Project Hail Mary. I’m glad I followed my friend’s advice and picked up a copy, because this was way better than Artemis.
