The writing was good and the story progressed but it was confusing and depressing. I don’t regret reading it but it’s not a book I’d recommend.

Beautifully written, very sad, a little self-indulgent

I found it fascinating to learn about Puritan society and the first murder in Plymouth, things were very different from what I was taught in school. What surprised me most was that Plymouth was a diverse community and that not everyone shared the Puritan beliefs.
I enjoyed that much of the book was told from the viewpoint of women, it gave me a lot to think about since history is pretty much silent about women in this place and time. Life in Plymouth was grim, especially for those who didn't fit into the strict code of Puritan society and for women. I would never have survived!

Beheld was...boring. The blurb made it sound far more interesting than it actually is. I think if it had been framed differently, my expectations wouldn't have been so high--and I wouldn't have been so underwhelmed. As a historical fiction book, it's okay. As a murder mystery, though, it's neither suspenseful nor riveting. It's truly a shame, because this book has so much potential, but it really missed its mark.

I thought this was going to be more "mystery" than narrative around the social circumstances of a murder in the Plymouth colony.

After giving the book more than a fair shake, I decided to give up on this one about halfway through. I think it had potential but ultimately failed to keep me engaged. Too much time was spent on the buildup and constantly eluding to some "event" while taking way too long to reveal it. After a while it felt repetitive and dragged out.
