This beautiful book. How many times did you make me cry?! A bunch! The found family. The sapphic romance. The representation. This is soft sci-fi. There are advanced science things happening and around but mostly this could take place now. The lessons here on being kind and accepting any and all regardless of differences between folks. The ending was perfection and I’m soo happy I finally made reading this book a priority. Strong contender for one of my favorite reads of the year!!

Ok so I’m writing this around 10% in so early for opinions, but I’m not a fan. The writing itself is very ‘he did this, she did that’, a lack of description and any kind of in-depth detail. The plot itself is one that’s not very enticing, with none of the characters interesting other than Alexandria. The main character, Ryann, seems very flawless, an orphaned girl who looks after her family and brings isolated people into her friendship group and ‘saves’ them. It’s too perfect. The way she brings people towards her is through some kind of aggression, which just feels wrong. She’s also strangely violent, which again feels wrong because it just doesn’t fit. She’s comfortable talking to anyone. She even talked to essentially a stranger’s father, whose daughter she’s pretty much just landed in hospital, and has sworn, used slightly rude tones and has asked invasive, personal questions. It’s just not realistic. They’ve established her orphanage because it will likely come into play as Alexandria lost her mum, using a tragedy to bring them closer together which if not written well will just feel like a cliche. I don’t know, so far I’m just not feeling it, the plot isn’t for me. Like it’s all a bit random, there’s no goal. She’s caught some kind of guitar song from the radio, which of course had to happen when she was the one trying to catch it, and not Alexandria who’d been trying for years, and now they’re off to the beach. It doesn’t feel like there is a storyline, I feel like this’d work better in a visual format because in a book format it feels really clunky. I’m now writing this a bit further into the book, and again, there’s not much development with the characters, and Ryann is unrealistic. She’s about to do illegal things to help Alexandria, but it doesn’t feel like they have a solid enough relationship to do that, it’s more just Ryann playing the hero again. I’m writing this now that I’ve finished it, and yeah not a fan. She just left to go to space, leaving everyone even James and Charlie, and now Alexandria is coming yet she said she couldn’t leave her dad? No consistent characters, and an uninteresting plot

+kinda fun

-didn’t like the ending, thought the whole point of the book was how terrible it was for a teen girl to go to space forever but then that flipped when the girl went to space?
-didn’t like the writing as much as the wicker king, or just seemed like it was trying too hard to be serious and deep

Oh this wonderfully beautiful book. This book if filled with wonderfully flawed and vulnerable and loveable characters. I adore all the friendships and the platonic or romantic relationships.

The bond between Ryann and James is magical and everything I want in a sibling relationship, I could read a whole series about those two and Charlie. I could also read a whole series about the entire group of misfits, they were so interesting and I loved their dynamic.

I really enjoyed the snark between Ryann and Alexandria and I feel like their relationship was very realistic and sweet.

The science-y stuff was really interesting and added an almost magical element to the book. The whole book has that magical quality to it and it's such a wonderful read. I could hardly put it down and can't wait to read more from K. Ancrum again.
