The advice? Gentle, and often helpful--any injunction to practice self-care, not obsess too much either over success or failure, and simply do what works best for you is bound to be (whether in writing or life in general).
The “omg-so-quirky-and-relatable” footnotes and asides? Hated them. Got old so quickly. Maybe some people will love them; I mostly tried to overlook them for the first few chapters, but the relentless onslaught of what I guess might be called millennial cringe(?) just wore me down and nearly overpowered the advice.

Gentle Writing Advice is the book I needed to kick off my 2024 writing year. At its core, it’s an anti-advice book. Chuck’s take on how he’s written over the years and how his perspective has changed with experience, filtered through the lens of a global pandemic. He offers up the old sage wisdom and then breaks it down, giving all the reasons that those “truths” are subjective at best, and myths at worst. It’s a fast read. Clever, witty, and full of the profanity that fans of his work have come to expect. If I have a complaint about it, it is the number of footnotes. A lot of comic relief is packed into them but they're overall distracting. Recommended for writers looking to extend themselves a little grace and write from a place of inspiration rather than from a purely business perspective. Also, for those who don’t mind a heavy dose of vulgarity. This one won’t be for everyone.

Truly enjoyed this one. It was exactly what I needed, as I try to take care of myself of a writer. Highly recommend for any writer to read, as we continue to learn how to nourish and take care of ourselves.

This is a nice validating palette cleanser of a book. Wendig has a quippy and snarky writing style that gave me more than a few chuckles.
