I finished reading this book at just the right time. It’s given me ideas on things to change to save myself burning out.

When I started it, I appreciated the overall sentiment but wasn’t finding it very revolutionary. I found the chapter about decluttering laboured and a bit boring.

I was hoping that McAlary would more about the philosophy of slow living. More about what it is as a concept and how to implement it beyond selling your old stuff you don’t use anymore. Towards the end of the book, she didn’t disappoint.

I loved the constant references to the seasons of life and how to take a longer term view of balance. As much as there can’t be a one size fits all approach to slow living, as McAlary points out throughout the book, I think she offers plenty of useful tactics on how to reframe the end game and prioritise accordingly.

I think the idea of living with intention calls is to take responsibility for the actions we take. It demands that we delineate between the bullshit we talk about doing, the stuff we waste time doing and the stuff that matters.

I also like how McAlary didn’t give us a new set of goals to strive for. She very carefully placed the ball squarely in our court acknowledging that what an enriched life looks like is very different for each and every one of us. It’s our job to take the time to identify what makes us feel alive and what legacy we want to leave behind and start living it instead of dreaming about it.

I wanted to not like this book. I thought it might be a little... smug. But McAlary's writing felt authentic to me, and her coverage of topics was comprehensive and gentle. The main message was: "it's ok to not be perfect" and we all need that reminder sometimes. No new, earth shattering info (it's not a reference book) but it felt real and deeply reassuring to me.
