I read this for the Women in Science Fiction book club, and was pretty put off by the cover (which looks very trashy), but I thought it couldn't be that bad. But yes, it was pretty bad. Athena, our irritating heroine who has amazing abilities with machines, gets kidnapped by genetically altered humans, has to stay on their world for a while, heads back home, has a showdown with her evil father... that sounds kind of exciting, right? But the plotting either drags or races way too fast, the showdown that the entire novel builds up to takes about half a page, and the romance was awful (I disliked both characters, so I guess maybe that's what they saw in each other). Very disappointing.

It has the feel of an old sci-fi fantasy with the political feelings of the present.

I'm gonna have to give up on this one. I can't stand the main character, and there's no way I want to read a whole book with her as the narrator. I don't like the writing style either. There are too many awkwardly phrased sentences, and it takes me out of the story (even though I don't want to be in the story to begin with).

Really enjoyed this one! The characters were fun, the world was interesting and the pace was fast. I enjoyed both this and Fortune's Pawn for Vaginal Fantasy March 2015 picks but this one edged it out for me since I liked Kit and I never liked Rupert. I'm a sucker for cat people, even ones with inner eyelids.

Classic space opera. This drew me in immediately and kept me reading. Athena wakes up in a bad situation and it just keeps getting worse and worse. But she's got a sense of humor about herself, besides being able to totally kick ass and save herself.

One thing I really liked was the author showing us an attraction between Athena and Kit but not bludgeoning us over the head with the details of their sex life. Sometimes I like a story that lets the characters close the bedroom door and have some privacy.

Nice twist at the end, too.

I give the first half a 4, the second half a 2. I wanted more Kit and Athena in space or Eden. The Lair, rescue, and return fell completely flat for me.

I didn't expect to like this, and turned out liking it quite a lot. Highly recommend for those who like the sci-fi and paranormal romance genres, simply for a change of pace. All the right elements, and good handling of the wrong ones, if that makes any sense.

I like the first three quarters better. On the other hand, the last bit didn't play out as I feared it would, so that wasn't so bad. Also, hooray for not the start of a series!

Totally fun space opera! A kick-ass rebel heroine is attached while traveling with her father and rescued by one of the legendary darkship thieves who raid the power seed farms of her world. But has she gone from the frying pan into the fire? This one has great action, a nice bit of romance, and winning characters. Although light and fast-paced, Darkship Thieves has nice chewy center of ideas and relationships to satisfy.

A fun read with interesting ideas and twist and turn and technology and philosophy. But stupid. Idiotically stupid. Flaws that were just ridiculous and not just one or two. 3 of 5.
