A little girl doesn't want to start school because she doesn't know much English. I felt that between the focus on the colors being used and the focus on being new, being nervous about starting school in a different language, and making friends, this book just tries to do too much.

I LOVE this book. The illustrations, the writing, the message - All of it good. I liked that it includes both spanish and english for bilingual classrooms. There are so many rich discussions that can be had from this book.

Good for a back-to-school or ELL book & making new friends.
I was distracted by the way the Black/coily hair was illustrated.

This book is going to resonate with so many children, and for so many reasons! For kids who are navigating two languages, this books clever use of translation will allow a child to learn vocabulary in both Spanish and English. They can learn words they may be struggling with ( like I did :) )
Having a vulnerable and likable character like Isabel will help kids relate. We've all felt the feelings Isabel feels; fear of starting a new school, worrying others may not like her, not understanding a new environment. So universal! All young readers will relate.
And the illustrations!!!! I would have devoured this book as a child! So much to see and explore.
This is not a simple, straightforward picture book. This is one a child can read (with or without their grownup) over and over and over.
