So Close to Being the Sh*t, Y'All Don't Even Know by Retta

This breezy, often hilarious memoir should appeal to fans of the TV show Parks and Recreation, and fans of the musical Hamilton, which Retta is obsessed with. Along with handbags, and various other parts of modern life that she digresses about with exuberant enthusiasm. I have zero interest in handbags, and couldn't tell a "name" one worth thousands from a cheapo, but I enjoyed Retta's sheer zest.

The parts I liked best were her frank memories about growing up a plus-size person of color, with immigrant parents, in poverty. Watching her work toward success was heart-warming as well as interesting.

Retta does not hold back from delivery opinions in salty language. I could hear her voice through the narrative, which made it that much more fun.

This book was absolutely hilarious and delightful! I am crazy jealous of Retta's Hamilton connections and hockey hook ups. She is living the dream and I can't even be jealous because she's so cool and funny. Damn you, girl. 6 out of 5 stars.

Retta is a smart, funny, hardworking woman. I think I went into this expecting more than it was meant to be. I wanted to connect with Retta but it was all a little too superficial for me. There were times when it was on the cusp of getting deep and real and she would pull back right at the precipice.

Quick and easy read. Might be a good airport/airplane read.

3.5 stars. I thought I’d really enjoy this - and I did, actually laughing aloud at points - but I found it easy for me to put down, which hasn’t been the case with other memoirs I’ve recently read by actresses/comedians. Perhaps it’s because I’m not as attached to this actress as some of the others I’ve read. Regardless, it’s a funny read so I’d recommend (particularly if you grew to know and love her through Parks and Rec… which, spoiler, I’ve *never* seen

I listened to the audiobook, which I think is really the only way to go. If you like Retta you'll like it. It's entertaining but pretty slight.

I did not know who she was before reading the book and now I’m a little bit of a fan!
Really funny, and genuine and very often relatable. I’m convinced nobody else can name drop so much and still be so likable.
Came away happy for her successes and wishing her more, if for no other reason than so she’ll have another book to read to me.
