Uskyldig ungdom i det romantiske Tyskland afløses af et helt andet Tyskland i 1930'erne - og venskabet bliver umuligt, verden ændrer sig og selv 1000årsriget synker i grus - men denne lille stramt komponerede roman om et venskab, beskriver måske 30'erne skarpere end de mange andre beretninger om alt det forfærdelige der fulgte, forbi lyset her er skarpest på det tabte Tyskland, ungdomsvenskabet og den kulturelle bredde - alt det nazismen senere forvandler til en karikatur og spænder for egen ideologi.
Det er en smuk fortælling, der på 90 sider poetisk begræder alt det tabte og helt usentimentalt opregner krigens følger.
Mens den danske titel gitterporten refererer til adskillelsen henviser originaltitlen Reunion til bogens elegante slutning. Det er en perle - og sågar en letlæst en af slagsen!

Novella or short story? Either way, small and perfectly formed. A story of friendship between two 16yr old boys, but not your usual coming of age story. This is Germany 1932/3 and one boy is Jewish, the other aristocratic Aryan. It is powerful in an incredibly understated, pared down way. Every word has to earn it's place and yet in his brevity, the author magically conjurs up his characters, their family background and the backdrop against which the story unfolds.
There is no sentimentality and no judgements in this much visited period of history but it is given a new perspective in this beautifully crafted slim volume.

Gli insegnamenti profondi che stanno dietro a questo libro mi hanno molto colpito. Il tema dell'antisemitismo è sempre un grande spunto di riflessione.
Una storia sempre attuale, carica di emozione fino all'ultima pagina e capace di far immedesimare qualsiasi lettore.

Questo libro l'avevo letto alle medie, saltando varie parti e senza comprenderlo davvero. Per fortuna poi è arrivata l'alphabet challenge a costringermi a leggerlo.
Devo ammettere che, nonostante da molti sia considerato un capolavoro estremamente toccante, a me è piaciuto in modo molto meno intenso. E' sicuramente una breve storia che ha il potere di farti riflettere, anche se fa fatica ad ingranare. Ho trovato i due protagonisti un po' troppo abbozzati, tanto da non riuscire ad empatizzare fino in fondo con loro ed è forse questo il motivo per cui non mi ha commosso così tanto. Mi è piaciuto però come questo stile lineare e ridotto all'osso, senza tanti fronzoli ed inutili lirismi, sia in grado di far pensare a come dovesse essere vivere nel 1933 per dei ragazzini. Mi è piaciuto come, pur parlando di totalitarismi su cui si è versato parecchio inchiostro, questo libro riesca a presentarlo in modo del tutto nuovo: si parla del cambiamento che si avverte nella comunità, attraverso gli occhi di un ragazzino che capisce ma allo stesso tempo non capisce. Mi è piaciuto soprattutto il finale, che ripaga la leggera noia iniziale e fornisce uno spunto ottimo di riflessione. Questi temi sono sempre attuali e probabilmente tutti dovrebbero leggero, anche se sconsiglio di imporlo a scuola perché, come successo a me, sarebbe solamente un altro libro e non verrebbe apprezzato come davvero dovrebbe. Però leggetelo.

This was such a heartbreaking Bildungsroman. The plot is rather simple and straightforward, but there’s a lot of emotion and thought in Uhlman’s writing that I found provocative. The major downside of novellas is that they’re always far too short, at least to me. Yet, somehow, the brevity of Reunion worked really well, capturing just enough of the friendship of Hans and Konradin, while also finding space to reflect on the complications that arose from the rise of Nazism to its aftermath. I guess what I mean to say is that every word was poignantly placed with great consideration.
And, to end this reflection, I don’t think I’ve read such an impactful final sentence like the one in this novella in years.

Although I found it hard to relate to the lives of the young men in this novella, I did get a sense of what it was like to be a Jewish person in Germany in the early 1930s. And the ending of this story was unexpected and welcome.
