I thought that this was a really interesting idea for a story, but I wish we hadn't been hinted so early on

that the mother might have some bird thing going on.

I did stay unsure for the duration of the book, but I kept thinking to myself,

"so is she a bird or is she not a bird? Like what's going on there.

But I really enjoyed the complicated relationship between the sisters, and I would read this author again.

I really enjoyed the magical/mystical aspects of the story line and found it to be a lovely read overall. That said, I have some feelings about the way the book discusses/treats familial bonds, especially the way it seems to prioritize genetic relationships over those of the people who are around.

Beautifully written, with lovely sibling relationships. There was quite a bit of repetition that pulled me from the story. The sister's ex-boyfriend really had no point as a character, other than maybe comic relief. And the overall point was a bit too esoteric for me. But I can definitely see the appeal and I would read more of this author's work.

3.5 ⭐️s. Tbh, I didn't expect much out of this one. I ended up having a good time with it though! Explores family dynamics in a speculative way that doesn't feel too hokey.
