what a conclusion! thoroughly engrossed the whole time.

it’s been a while since i read book 1 — and definitely feel the need for a reread now — so i had to go a bit slowly to remember things and not get completely lost. but it was so worth it. a lot of this book was hard to read because it was so familiar but it was so good. cried at multiple spots. loved all the new friends made along the way. the ending was everything i wanted from the story: there were multiple points where i was scared of the direction it was going, but it always worked out exactly like it should. incredible, incredible book. i love these characters so much.

I will confess, it took me a while to put my thoughts together for Practice. The first book of The Heretic's Guide to Homecoming duology, Theory, is one of the first books that I'll recommend to anyone looking for an introspective, character focussed fantasy - the worldbuilding is incredible, and the characters feel like real friends by the end of the book. Needless to say, I was HIGHLY anticipating Practice, and it did not disappoint.
Practice is a triumph. There is a whole host of new characters that leap off of the pages (I, personally, would DIE for Nazum), and Practice balances the joy of adventure and of discovering new places with the deep soul-searching that must happen when you begin questioning the beliefs that you never thought you would doubt.
Both of the books in this duology came to me at times when I needed them most - Theory helped me come to terms with my own anxieties, and Practice, while very painful to read at times, gave me perspective on depression. It's very hard to review a book that has made such a big personal impact - I am writing this review almost two months after I read Practice, but the cities, companions, and lessons that Ronoah encounters along his journey are still at the forefront of my mind.

It's been a few days since finishing this book, and thus finishing this story and I'm still feeling so full. The poeticism and word-wizardry is such a gift to read and the continuation of the story is beautiful.

This book made me laugh and cry and smile and reflect, not only on Ronoah and his friends and experiences, but on my own self. To be able to invest yourself so deeply into a book and its story and characters and to have that book prod back, lodging itself into your little brain folds to think on its philosophies and theories to apply in your own practices is a gift.

I already cannot wait to re-read
