Didn’t expect to like this book as it was set in Italy and not Norfolk, but actually loved bed it

4.5 ⭐ Found this to be a slow burner that gradually ramps up, weaving a lot of threads simultaneously to a tense ending, but also with some unexpected twists. There are undercurrents that comment on bigger issues such as immigration that give more depth but could possibly be a bit more involved in the plot. I like the consistent development of characters throughout the series.

In this book Ruth goes away to Italy for a while, to help a friend from her past with a dig. She takes Kate with her and Shona and her son also join. In the meantime, Nelson is also visited by someone from his past, but that is less peaceful than Ruths encounter. Or is it?

This might be one of my favorites in the series. It had a compelling mystery, but it was also really nice to see Ruth away from the Saltmarsh. I love how the personal dynamics get flipped upside down in this one. I find myself drawn into the personal drama more and more after every book. It's almost like reading a soap opera combined with Bones haha. Loved it. The only negative is that I probably have to wait a long time for number 11 to come out.

There was a stretch of these in the middle of the series that seemed stale, but this one and the one before have been excellent.
The mystery didn't feature as much as I normally like, but the characters are being developed more and more. Usually I don't like that, but these characters have stayed compelling so my normal complaints don't seem to apply.

In Dark Angel, Ruth is invited to a small Italian village by an old colleague to provide her expert opinion on an old skeleton uncovered during a dig. During the visit (inevitably) someone is murdered and some obscure events occur which leads to Ruth becoming more embroiled in uncovering the actual events.  Not a bad novel for a slow Sunday afternoon, though the storyline could have done with more complexity. The whodunnits are well written and there are a few twists and turns and the development of the backstory is as always decent without detracting from the whodunnits.
