An excellent tale of the Batman at the height of his powers. And everyone shows up! Catwoman, Poison Ivy, Nightwing, Huntress… A complete list would be tantamount to spoilers so you'll just have to read it yourself. And you'll be glad you did.

There was only one plot element I did not like but I do agree that it had to be that way. Too bad for those involved.

This is my first time really venturing into comic book territory. I asked a friend where to start with comic books, saying Batman was the super I was most familiar with, and they recommended Hush. I think this was a good place to start, as with my surface level knowledge of Batman, I liked being able to recognize the major cameos in the story and it got me excited for who we were going to run into next. I was looking for that classic art style which Jim Lee brought into the story and I also liked the flashbacks done in the watercolor style.
While I liked the cameos, I think this story may have suffered from too many of them? I do like when a story dives into and explores the antagonist, to help me feel the tension with our protagonist and be invested into solving the mystery. Because this story featured so many baddies, I didn't feel like I could connect/invest myself enough into the string of crimes to solve with mystery with Batman and moreso turned into counting how many villains can we fit into one book? I still had a good time overall and hope to check out more soon.

Is this a worse book than Long Halloween? Yeah, probably. Do I like it quite a bit more? Also yeah.

Provides a nice crash course of Batman characters and mythos information along with a pretty simple mystery. The mystery isnt all that great, but the character work between the cast keeps the story engaging. Quite like the stuff with Bruce and Selina, as well as the very final twist. Fun!

So, not long ago I picked up a copy of the Batman 75th anniversary box set, which is made up of 3 separate stories: The Dark Knight Returns, The Court of Owls and Hush. I also put caked up both Year One and The Killing Joke separately.

Of them all, I knew that at least 3 were (supposedly) very good: The Dark Knight Returns, The Killing Joke and Year One. What I ddid nt know, however, was just how good Hush was.

Set during a period when Batman is at the top of his game (unlike the older Batman of The Dark Knight Returns, or the younger of Year One), this graphic novel includes just about any and all of Batmans friends and foes - top of my head, I can think of only one major villain who doesn't play a role (but is mentioned in passing).

Like The Dark Knight Returns, it also includes The Man of Steel in the story, with Batman and Superman again facing off against one another in a portion of it (but for very different reasons than in The Dark Knight Returns).

OK, it may be pretty obvious - I felt - fairly early on just who is pulling the strings, but this still makes for a very enjoyable and dynamic read, with some of the best artwork I have yet seen in any of the graphic novels I have read.

I truly loved this as a teenager, but now as an adult I can see too many of its flaws. Jeph Loeb never reached the heights of his work on The Long Halloween, and his dialogue in this book is often trite and confusing. There are so many red herrings which leave the reader grasping at the mystery, but they are all mostly explained away with typical comic book shenanigans. My historical fondness for this book has upped its rating, as well as the stellar art from the always stellar Jim Lee.
