This one was fine, but there were enough elements that I did not care for that it is a 2-star read for me.

I was initially interested in following the breadcrumbs to see what happened to Owen, but as things started unravelling, I was disappointed. First off, I didn't love the fact that he disappeared, leaving an angry teenaged daughter with her stepmom of ONE YEAR, telling his wife to protect this kid who has been a total asshole to her.

Spoilery bits here:
SpoilerI don't care for organized crime books, so realizing that was ultimately the reason for his disappearance was a letdown. It was also very frustrating that he just... never comes back and forces the main character to finish raising his daughter. I know that she was wholeheartedly on board, but I believe the timeline was that they had known each other for a total of maaaybe two years? You are really going to just trust that this person will take care of your child?

With that said, the elements that I liked were enough that I will probably try another book by this author.

A somewhat interesting story made into a snoozefest and eye rollathon. How many times can you write “And that stops him”?? Well, “I clock that” Dave can write the same inane phrases repeatedly with no remorse!

Loved this book! It was so cute, and heartbreaking and thoughtful. It was unlike anything I’ve ever read before. There were plenty of twists I never expected. The ending was perfect. It was a little slow in some spots for me. I’m excited to read more from this author!

This book started off with a lot of promise but halfway through it took an odd turn and completely lost me.

I loved this book! It’s so hard to describe my feelings for it without giving any spoilers (but I’ll try). The story started off gradually, much like Hannah and Bailey’s relationship. I thought their bond grew out of necessity, but Hannah truly became her mother in trying to protect her, which was her father’s wish. I found Laura Dave’s writing both exciting and steady, if that makes sense - it was a page turner but at the same time there was so much to think about within those pages about families and our choices. I surprised myself when I didn’t cry at the end but it was definitely bittersweet. This was a book on my TBR list that I really wish I didn’t wait so long to read because it was fabulous!
