This story had me wanting to hold my child so close and never letting her go, because this world is so so cruel. But this story was so good and such an eye opening experience. Many moons ago the movie Slumdog Millionaire came out and it highlights the rough streets of India and some very difficult things to watch that happen to children who are orphaned or runaways. This story took me back to the first time I watched that movie. The amount of hurt and trauma these kids went thru but their drive to live “free” and away from abuse is what this journey is about. I would definitely recommend this story to maybe older kids, because of the difficult topics.

"The Bridge Home" is a powerful story about two sisters (one with a disability) who run away from home and learn to make friends, stay away from danger, and make a living on the rough city streets of Chennai, India. It tackles difficult subjects such as parental abuse, mental illness, and death, in a way so that a younger audience can understand and learn about the different experiences and a different culture. Although these topics can be a little bit upsetting, I think it is an important story and would recommend for 11+.

This book has only 208 pages, but the author managed to fit so much emotion and details into it. Viji and Rukku run away from a bad situation at home, and find a family with two boys. The book depicts their journey and struggles. The author’s descriptions were heavenly, and the emotion was phenomenal. I was lucky enough to meet with the author, and hearing her process and words just made the book mean so much more to me. This is a middle grade book, but I recommend it to anyone that wants a loveable found family story. Also, the book also has cultural references! It takes place in Chennai, India and uses words of the character’s native tongue. It also celebrates their holidays, and mentions types of Indian food.
