Dystopia, science, dysfunctional relationships … oh my. Literally my kinda book and it just fell flat. WHAT DISEASE / ILLNESS does Mauro have?!? I am so confused. How are some people able to be in what seems like air that should infect you (because the MC is out and about on a number of occasions) but not infected while others are dying in the ICU?! The poems at the end (start?) of each chapter… make them make some semblance of sense with the rest of the story. This felt disjointed, lackluster, and left me with so many questions. I was really hoping for a Soylent green plot twist at the end with MeatRite, but alas it just wasn’t in store for me….

I will say I found the tub scene riveting

Reminds me of “How High We Go in the Dark” - love this author’s way of evoking dread amidst the mundane - the juxtaposition is well crafted and devastating. I also loved the Apartment by them and will be reading anything they write in future as these stories are psychologically sharp with writing that’s super accessible.

It’s more a character study - both of the MC and of the world that is shifting & dying. It’s reflective and haunting.

If the Apartment was too much for you (which I get, trigger warnings abound for that one) - I think this is a lot more palatable for readers being introduced to their writing.

A little heavy on the ableism and fat phobia (the narrator looks after a boy with Prader-Willi Syndrome) but hauntingly beautiful and horrible all at once.
