Take this review with a grain of salt because I think some of my issues with pacing were exacerbated by taking longer to read in Spanish. Still, it was really slow which helped to communicate the themes while also being a bit of a chore at times. That said, the way this book captured the mundanity of the world ending was really haunting. I give extra props to this book for being lockdown lit before COVID happened which helps it avoid a lot of the cliches that make media about the time period feel really cheesy and overly sentimental.

It took some fortitude to get into this story as it is not plot driven, and there is little exposition. You just jump into the world as it is and the characters lives as they are. I thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful prose and vivid visceral descriptions of the setting. It is a very bleak story of environmental degradation, abandonment and hunger that left me feeling some type of way!

Thank you Scribner and NetGalley for the digital copy.

I understand what the author/book was trying to do but there wasn’t enough of it. i was left confused and disappointed there wasn’t more depth to what was being told. i loved the first half but the last half was hard to get through

Loved the writing, loved the immersive atmosphere, HATED the fatphobia, and wished the relationships between the main character and her mom and Max were fleshed out more. Overall, I enjoyed the book but thought it tried to tackle too much. Excited to read The Rooftop by this author!
