The Impostor: A True Story by Javier Cercas

Does an attempt to understand an individual imply justification of their behaviour? Enric Marco presented himself as an anti-Franco fighter and survivor of the Nazi concentration camps. His deceptions were revealed by historian Benito Bermejo. In this non-fiction novel, Cercas explores Marco’s motives for his deception, and uses it as a starting point for a reflection on the role of reality and fiction, and the stories we tell about ourselves. In places it is a little repetitive, but I recommend it.

Incredibly written book on impostor syndrome. The author's and the subject. Makes you question your own role in history vs storytelling. If fiction is lies then literature is supposed to fool us so if humans lie is it not an oratory literature??

Not my normal choice- this one was for book club- but interesting to mix it up a bit! The story of Marco is interesting. I felt less interested in Javier's own musings or his relationship with his son. Overall it could have done with being a bit tighter.
Nonetheless it was a good insight into recent Spanish history and the oddities of Marco himself

I thought Enric Marco was an interesting character, the book felt overwhelming with getting feeling into Javier Cercas’ life and him working on the Enric Marco project
