I love the fairy tale of the Sea King and this was a fantastic retelling - an enjoyable story and well written.

I think this would have been better if I had any knowledge of Chinese mythology....

Read this for book club! Getting into this story was a little tough because I was having trouble following the world and it’s magic system. I think if you knew this folktale and origin story prior to reading then it would be an easier experience. For instance, it’s easy for me to quickly dive into peter pan, beauty and beast, cinderella, etc retellings because I already know the fairytale. It took me a little while to process what was happening, but I loved the vibes of the story. The book read to me like a disney movie, even the characters and the way they talked, so it was a cute read
