A Must Read

This is the second book I've read about the descendants of the original monsters and I was a little concerned they'd be too similar to distinguish between them, but I was worried for nothing. This book was fabulous and completely unique. I can't wait to see what's next!

Academy for Monsters is the first book by Madeline Fay and Jenee Robinson of their co-written book in their new series Descendants of Nightmares. If you are a fan of the "old" monsters - Dracula, Frankenstein, the Mummy, etc then this is the book to pick up! It is absolutely delicious and you won't want to put it down as it pulls you deeper within its dark pages full of steam, drama, and angst.
Academy for Monsters is a truly delicious book that had me hooked from beginning to end. I couldn't have put this book down if I had wanted to and trust me...there was not one second of where I wanted to part with this book all the way to the end. This book gives readers the children of the old monsters and how one, Dru, is working towards the path of being the queen over all the monsters. She's looking forward to her time at the academy, but what she doesn't know is that her friends have changed a bit...or for a couple...quite a lot. While yes they have all changed physically it's the mental side that she is going to have to worry about the most. Add in a "new" monster and things are about to get dangerous in more ways than one.
As I read this book I couldn't tell you who wrote which part of this book. I love it. I absolutely love it when two authors can come together and so seamlessly blend their writing styles to create such a masterpiece of a storyline. Dru is truly an engaging character and I love that she doesn't have a spoiled or bratty demeanor. She has her own issues that she is suddenly struggling with as she also has to deal with the drama and issues thrown at her from seemingly all sides.
I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. This book gives you academy with steamy, lots of drama, and a deadly kiss of danger that is closer than any of them can think. If you're looking for a good book to pick up and devour then this one that I should grab, just make sure to clear your schedule because you won't be doing anything until you've turned the last steamy page.

I always feel horrible when I rate a book this low, but also believe it could have been better. Normally I can look pass some grammar/mechanical issues in stories. If the actual plot and the characters are flowing well, it's easy to disregard mistakes and enjoy the story. I think this had amazing potential. I also have a weakness for monster stories.

The authors need to send this to an editor, than beta readers, and then do another edit. There were just too many mistakes that it made it impossible to overlook. I also think in general we should've had a better introduction to our characters. It went zero to a hundred. This is meant to be a series, so book one should be a build up. World building doesn't matter much for this series I think. What we needed is clear distinctions of who the characters were.

In my opinion Watt and Matthias are basically the same. They have the same personality. Thorn and Jr. also share similarities. We have Vex who's also a little different, but like the former four, he's instantly obsessed.

If I were the Beta reader, I'd suggest that the authors spend more time developing the personalities of those five. I also think this story would've been more addicting if they 'faked' their dislike for her, but still demonstrated attraction. Vex was meant to hate her, the fact that he gave up on that hate because she's a pretty face was pretty lame. I think in general all the males gave up because she's attractive. That's too superficial for my taste.
