A fabulously imaginative and clever novel that delves into how new technologies, and social media in particular, are and will affect our lives. It is a very funny novel, but at the same time very sad, as social media apps and their makers conspire to control and manipulate peer-group-driven users. Many of the imagined apps are already in use in similar forms.

The story revolves around a single dad trying to relate to his kids who are too caught up in online worlds to interact with him.

The novel is written in a very clever way, with the page divided in two for most of the novel. On one side of the page we have the story narrative, on the other side we have quick web stories. Some of the web stories are regularly updated, some of them directly or indirectly relate to what is happening in the ongoing main story narrative.

The dialogue is amazing, from officous teachers and social workers to racist sewerage workers, to totally unempathetic app designers, to the fragmented conversations of youth.

I thoroughly recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys thinking about the effect of social media and apps on us and how they might change us.

I actually really liked this book. Thought the story was clever and entertaining. However, I had a real problem with the format of this novel on my Kindle. There were four or five sections in the book that split “news articles” with the narrative, which is fine, but the Kindle interpreted these as tables and you couldn’t adjust the format, again not a major issue, however the tables were close to 4-point type and sometimes colored which created a situation where the type was nearly invisible in these areas. That’s what took me so long reading this book. I read about 85% of it in two days and then these table sections took weeks to get through 10 pages at a time. Amazon needs to fix the Kindle edition.

This one swings for the fences with an attempt to do something with the format, which usually I hate but it worked somewhat? I kept feeling like it like it would fall into place but now wish the second I saw it I tried to find out how the author intended it to be read. You can completely ignore it and still get the book though.

The ending also felt like he ran out anyplace to go versus coming together.
