The Burning Room is a typical Connelly plotting masterpiece. Bosch and his new partner are a good pair. Connelly delivers a gritty story filled with twists and both justice and injustice. I am looking forward to the next Bosch book to see where Connelly takes this character. Fantastic book. Highly recommended for anyone enjoying police procedural books. 4.5 stars.

The Burning Room

When the victim in a 20 year old shooting finally dies from his injuries, detective Harry Bosch and his new partner, Lucia Soto begin investigating only to realize that there is more to the case than meets the eye, and the victim may not have been a random bystander after all.

Michael Connelly's writing has become more cohesive over time and this installment has few of the internal musings and scenic ramblings that plagued the first few books in the series. While Harry is a compelling character, it is evident that he is mellowing in his old age and he handles the conflicts with his superiors with more aplomb; he has definitely learned to pick his battles.

The book focuses on two separate cases. The first is the death of Orlando Merced and its possible links to the highest levels of Los Angeles' political elite, and the second is the devastating fire at the Bonnie Brae apartment complex, which took the lives of several children. Each case is well developed with the clues coming at a rapid pace, and while they are both resolved in a believable way, the resolutions feel too easy at the end.

Overall, another entertaining addition to the Bosch series and I'm glad that I've gotten back into it after taking along break.

way better story than a lot of the previous, also better narrator for audiobook. Good background to have on when you're doing other things

Average Bosch story. A number of years back, I couldn't get enough of Michael Connelly but things took a bit of a nosedive after Mickey Haller came along and I gave his books a break. Coming back to Connelly via this book 10 years on, I can't remember what all the fuss was about.

The stories are well-told, fast-moving and page-turners but there's no depth to them. It's like watching an episode of CSI - straightforward story-telling, taking you straight from A to B.

Don't think I'll bother with any others.

I didn't know that wasn't the true finale of the series when I read it; that said, maybe that's the reason why I enjoyed it so immensely. Good police procedural fun, and, for some reason, I found Soto's character particular charming. That said, you really have to be into this sort of books to enjoy it - it's a procedural story, not a detective novel.

Review: One Bosch novel is, and is not, like the others. This one seemed a little slower than some of the others. And I felt like it was lacking the personal touch that the others have all contained, but nonetheless, it was an entertaining read.
