These Jill Mansell books are fun! I feel like I've gone from only wanting to read books set in Britain to only wanting to read books set in small Cotswold villages. This one seemed a little crazier than your average Sophie Kinsella (e.g. there are DRUGS!...although they are portrayed with very much that "stay off DRUGS, kids!" kind of tone.) but still everything ties up so neatly at the end.

(Some interesting stuff about what makes a good woman/female partner and what makes a bad one. Apparently women cannot be pushy at all and type-A women who "know what they want," are to be questioned. Even though the book is very much by, about, and for women, it's espousing a lot of patriarchial nonsense under the surface--every woman should want babies, women should wear what their men want them to wear, or not wear, like make up, men get to decide when women look like "themselves," women can definitely "do for themselves" for a while, but they should eventually find a man and settle down and have babies, etc.)

A great page-turner of a story - lots of secrets and intrigue.

Unread shelf project 2021: book 80.

I love Jill Mansell’s books and this was no exception. A fun story, with multiple subplots that all were tied up neatly and happily by the end of the book.

Also? Although I am not a fan of babies in general, I loved how Mansell wrote about Delphi in this book. Her characterization of an infant (under a year old until the last 10% or so of the book) was spot on and hilarious!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again — I love books with happily ever after endings, especially right now. Books like these help me cope with the turmoil & chaos of “real life.”

Way more casual woman-hating than I can tolerate in my light romances. Also the evil big city is bad and full of temptations and there's no way our male protag can be a good parent while exposed to all this so best head to a small wholesome village where there is a handy girl next door who can act as surrogate mum, like that's the audition you have to pass.
