This is an incredibly beautiful novella, creating such clear and resonating emotion through sparse and simple prose. A lovely read.

This book, somehow, is more about what is unsaid than what is said. Totally beautiful writing. And a melancholy, yet somehow hopeful story that has been much more impactful to me than I'd expect from such a tiny book.

A beautifully crafted novella set in southeastern Ireland in the early 1980s. A young girl is sent to live with distant relatives during the long, hot summer when her overworked mother is waiting to give birth to yet another child. In the care of the Kinsellas, the girl blossoms—though all summers must end. Claire Keegan's writing is spare yet evocative, deftly conjuring up the rural Ireland of my childhood. I could hear the characters so clearly as they spoke. Foster is both a heartwarming and a heart-bruising read.
