I was disappointed in this because I really liked The Corrections. It was a page-turner, but his characters were all cliches and the narrative went all over the place. Also, he seems a tad obsessed with sex...in fact, Freedom was recently nominated on The Huff Post for worst sex-scene writing ever. Compelling to read, but it hardly lives up to the hype.

I’m glad I did finish the book, but there were many, many points I wanted to stop. Even after getting through the whole thing, I can’t say I really enjoyed it—it was just “eh” and a looooong “eh” at that. Nothing in the writing or the story struck me as particularly interesting or poignant.

Ugh. Loved "The Corrections," but this miasma lost me quickly. Do not bother.

Shit, that was good. It’s a brutally honest look at the description of a families, relationships, friendships, species, ecosystems with an ending I thought I would hate but it was a perfect complicated simple story of life. The Iraq stuff felt a little forced, out of place and wrapped up in too conveniently. Otherwise, if it had focused on just the relationships, which Iraq loosely did and mirrors certain aspects, it would be perfect.

A long but satisfying read, at first I was a bit unsure if I would carry on with this as I felt the treatment of Patty's sexual assault was quite flippant, by both the author and the family, but I stuck around and I did like the character development, and it all just felt very real, messy families, trying to unsay the unsayable and to forgive the unforgivable and yet still loving each other in spite of everything. I also quite liked the ending, which I was kind of dreading how all of the different characters might end up, but it's handled in a neat but also believable way. Happy to have read it.
