I was originally going to give this four stars, but was incredibly impressed with the character development at the end. I felt like it took me out of literature and into real life.

I had no idea where this book was going and I loved that. I just really enjoyed reading this, couldn’t put it down.

  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? It's complicated
  • Loveable characters? No
  • Diverse cast of characters? No
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

I loved it up until 3/4’s in. Then it got a little Ridiculous. Cecily is sooo wishywashy and does not make her own decisions. Ends up with the person she does simply out of convenience.
The first 3/4 was really good. A total page turner. But then I think the author just got stuck and didn’t know what to do.
The ending is just not good.

Giffin is an expert at writing characters that anger me, but I like that. I love when authors can invoke a range of emotions with their writing. This book did that. This is also similar to The Light We Lost by Jill Santopolo.

Could not put it down. Would have been a 5-star rating for me if the ending had been a little more satisfying. I’m not sure what a more satisfying ending would have looked like, but it felt sort of lacking. Loved it throughout though, especially the references to her previous books.

The twists twisted. The 9/11 tragedy. The love triangle. The surprised pregnancy. The “deaths”.
