This was an amazing, emotional, inspiring story of recovery from the horrors of child acting. Jennette wrote her story in such a real way; I could connect with her so much. The tonal shifts from childhood to adulthood were subtle and seamless. The only reason I didn't rate this a 5 was because of how triggering some of the content was, especially the eating disorders and the emotional abuse. For me, it felt overwhelming, which is exactly what we're supposed to feel, but it was still a lot. This doesn't make the book worse, just something I'm so glad I read and can appreciate, but not something I would read again.

Very quick read/listen. Eye-opening to the life of being an actor in Hollywood, especially a child actor. If you watched Quiet On Set, you’ll be interested in this. Definitely a bit sad but very well told and informative.

amazing book. covers her entire life pretty much up until she starts writing the book. it was incredible. VERY easy read vocab- & language-wise, but very difficult read regarding content. HEED THE CONTENT WARNINGS. if any of the CWs trigger you, especially the ones listed “graphic,” DO NOT READ THIS BOOK. otherwise, it’s an incredible read.

lots of humor in suffering w/ a hopeful ending theme of overcoming adversity. amazingly written. i was hooked from the first page. mccurdy is an amazingly talented creative nonfiction writer (& doesn’t hurt that she’s had a life so crazy it seems like it should be fiction).

5⭐️ but i reserve actual 5⭐️ ratings on storygraph for my favorite books of all time

i've never watched anything with mccurdy in it, so nothing in here particularly changed the way i view her as an actress or her characters, and i'm sure people who have dealt with these things and had her as a childhood icon are going to be more touched than i was. it's a very engaging memoir, extremely easy to read and short enough that i managed to read it in two days, which is a feat for me. however, her sentence structure isn't always the best, the humor feels forced and off beat with jokes that just aren't funny, and there's some repetition that makes me roll my eyes a little bit. there's a lack of editing in here that i feel would improve the book immensely. still, good for her. glad she's doing better and etc.
