I already thought Andrea Gibson was an amazing poet by watching them perform spoken word poetry, but actually reading their work definitely gave them a special place in my heart. I love that their style and choice of words are quite simple but carry so much. It gave me chills and made me cry a little. What a beautiful artist.

Beautiful poetry, better when Andrea speaks it aloud. I can't recommend it more that you go and check out 'pansies' on youtube.

I absolutely adores Gibson’s collection of poetry. Their writing style is a mesh of love poem and political commentary and it is beautiful to read. In their poem “1988”, Gibson says “people who have been through hell / will build their love from the still burning coals” which speaks very nicely to the tone of the collection. The poems touch on many social topics, ranging from gender to race to relation building. For being so diverse in the topic choice though, every poem still ties together very nicely with underlying tones of perseverance and acceptance. I highly recommend this poetry collection.
P.S. Gibson has recordings of many of the poems on Spotify so I also recommend listening to those as you read so you can really hear their voice as you read. It’s a really cool experience to read and hear the poems at the same time.

While some the subject matters of this poem collection were rather grim (e.g. mental illnesses, illness, racism/hate crimes, sexual assault) there are also a decent amount of bittersweet poems of past loves.
My favourites were “A Letter To My Dog Exploring The Human Condition” (p.21-25), “The Madness Vase, AKA The Nutritionist” (p.26-29), “A Letter To White Queers, A Letter To Myself” (p.35-37), “LALALOL” (p.41), “Things That Don’t Suck” (p.45), “Etiquette Leash”(p.67-70), “The Privilege Is Never Having To Think About It” (p.79-81), “Prism” (p. 83-86), “Ballad Of The Unused Tandem Bike” (p.91-93), ”Before The Fever Broke” (p.103-104) and ”Honey” (p.112-115).
I like the way Andrea Gibson writes. Everything is so wordy and pretty and passionate.
