god damnit, this was one of the depressing time loop stories. i loved it, it was great. I thoroughly enjoy seeing characters learn to grow as people when in time loops. i love the “oh god it’s groundhog day” realization, i love the pain and acceptance when it comes to cases like this one. had to take off my glasses to cry.

Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke always write fantastic books, and they certainly don’t disappoint in How to Save A Life. This book is easily in my Too 3 books that they have written.

Picture a book version of Bill Murray’s Groundhog Day, only much more tragic, and you will have a general idea of the plot of How to Save A Life. It goes so much deeper than that, though. This book dives deep into the life of the main protagonist, Dominic, and follows his journey as he learns to let go of his past to allow new possibilities for his future. Unfortunately for Dominic, his adventure takes the form of living the same tragic day over and over again.

The characters in this book are very well written. Dominic is very set in his ways and is reluctant to change, though not totally unwilling. He is extremely against taking risks. Mia, on the other hand, is almost the exact opposite. Her entire life is ever changing and full of risks. She is one that can and will pack up and leave at a moment’s notice. Their differences make for very interesting interactions.

I feel that How to Save a Life has a perfect ending. It is both heartbreaking and hopeful. It is a complete ending, although it leaves a very important question unanswered - how/why did all of this happen?

It’s Groundhog Day meets unrequited love!

How to Save A Life follows play-it-safe Dominic (aka Dom) who proposed to his live-life-on-the-edge girlfriend Mia in their early twenties and then promptly called it off due to his fears. Ten years later and Dom is still hung up on Mia, so when he runs into her at a coffee shop he believes it’s fate (something “old” Dom would never believe in). But then, Mia dies on their first outing together a few days later. Even more unbelievable? Dom continues to relive the exact same day EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. Can he ultimately save Mia by making different choices, or does he finally realize that she isn’t the one who needs saving?

A book version of Groundhog Day where Dominic lives the same Thursday over and over again, and each day ends in tragedy for Mia, the girl that he let go 10 year’s ago but that reappeared in his life.

This felt like a romantic version of "Final Destination" and I am so here for it. I wish it had gotten off to a faster start but upon finishing, the start was a great way to begin the book even though it isn't my personal taste.

I really wanted to love this book but it just wasn't for me. For starters, the main character, Dom, is very unlikable. He's this really boring guy that is obsessed with his ex, Mia, in an unhealthy way. I didn't really get what made their relationship that amazing for Dom to wildly obsess about it. Further, I found a flaw in the time loop that will hopefully be fixed before the release date. (Spoiler!). One Thursday Dom goes out to buy ingredients for chicken soup and then the next Thursday he wakes up and immediately makes chicken soup? Shouldn't he go to the supermarket first on this Thursday as well? Even though this book was not for me, I did really like the ending and I would still recommend the book to fans of the '''Groundhog Day'' movie. I wish I liked this book but unfortunately, the book didn't move me at all :(
