Interessante Geschichte mit philosophischen Ansätzen und einem Plot, der zum Nachdenken anregt. Ich hätte zu Beginn nicht erwartet, dass sich das Buch inhaltlich so entwickelt. Aufgrund der vergangen Jahre mit der Corona Pandemie wird ein spannendes Thema aufgegriffen, sodass das Szenario der Geschichte noch realistischer wirkt. Schöne Passagen über die Ehrlichkeit und Reinheit der menschlichen Natur, zugleich aber auch traurig und bedrückend.

Wauw, wauw, wauw! Dit boek is absoluut een van mijn favorieten van 2020. Het is een mix van thema's die je niet samen verwacht (economie, griep, een walvis...), en het is dan ook nog eens geschreven alsof het een sprookje is. Ik had het heel snel uit door de mix van die verrassende elementen! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Wat ik vooral leuk vond, is dat het boek me liet nadenken. Ik heb in 2020 bij geen enkel boek zoveel bijgeleerd als bij De dag dat de walvis kwam. Het zegt misschien al genoeg dat er in dit fictieve verhaal wél een bronvermelding is opgenomen achteraan? Dat toont al meteen dat er goed over het boek is nagedacht en dat het niet zomaar fictie is. Bovendien vond ik het ontzettend straf dat John Ironmonger dit boek al in 2015 uitgebracht, toen er nog helemaal geen sprake was van de Corona-epidemie! Hij heeft het allemaal als ware voorspeld...
Ik concludeer dat ik een grote fan ben van De dag dat de walvis kwam en dat ik het boek aan iedereen aanraad! Het is brandend actueel, spannend, mysterieus en inhoudelijk diepgaand: ik denk dat elke lezer wel iets uit dit boek kan halen.

I was wary of the line "Warning: This book may restore your faith in human nature" on the front cover, but I'm a sucker for pretty art and a snappy blurb, and I was quickly drawn into the story. That is to say, I repeatedly showed excerpts about the calamitous potential of a flu epidemic to unwitting family members in my vicinity while hysterically whispering, "This was published in 2015!" And yes, in the end, the warning was quite warranted.
I personally thought the romance elements were extraneous - sure, the whole thing with Polly adds drama, but the ending with Aminata is literally sailing off into the sunset for a happy ever after. A bit too Hollywood. Eh, whatever.
The other thing that impresses me about this book is the research that went into the apocalypse scenario. This thing has a veritable bibliography of famous thinkers, and it weaves in philosophy and economics into a considered reflection on civilisation, chock-full of symbolism yet staying relatively grounded. Would recommend, especially in these COVID times. Good for both the head and heart.

Ob es eine gute Idee war, in der Pandemie, einen Pandemie Roman zu lesen?
Jetzt im Nachhinein gesehen würde ich sagen: Ja, definitiv.
Auch wenn sich der Anfang des Romans etwas zog (Analyst Joe flieht aus der Londoner City wegen eines von ihm programmierten Fehlers in einem Finanzanalyseprogramm, dass Millionen Verluste einbringt in das kleine Dorf St. Piran, wo er ins offene Meer hinausschwimmt und dort mit einer Begegnung durch einen Wal fast stirbt), konnte mich der Rest des Buches dann doch noch packen.
Wie in liebevoller Kleinarbeit die Beziehungen der Menschen im Dorf beschrieben werden und auch die charakterliche Darstellung von Joe haben mich überzeugt.

Maybe I didn’t like this one as much as I normally would because we’re still in a pandemic, but I felt like the relationships between the characters lacked depth and resolution and I actually don’t know what to take from the novel. Still, the descriptions of the whale and the little village with its odd characters were beautiful.
