The first piece of horror media in a long time that has made me physically uncomfortable. Outbreak meets lord of the flies, if both of those things were cranked up to a hundred. A harrowing story that manages to find the soft pieces of humanity in an impossible situation. While also being deeply upsetting, a page turner to be sure - but avoid if you're squeamish.

This book was just NOT for me. I can deal with the disgusting 🪱. I cannot deal with the overly descriptive torture for the hell of it. I was skipping pages where the words were making me feel sick. There were definitely some freaky and unsettling parts in this book, but not in a good way for me.

I don't have the stomach for how much animal torture/killing there is in this- it's really intense.  It's also really tough watching the kids in danger.

I wanted to finish this SO BADLY. It’s just TOO SCARY. It hits too many of my triggers (contagions, violence involving animals). The writing is wonderful, the character development is complex and fascinating, and the suspense and fear are built flawlessly. This book really hits (what I think) are the most terrifying elements of horror and science fiction really well; it hovers just barely outside reality, with enough believability to make the reader forget they’re in a fictional realm.  I simply found it too scary to continue. That being said, I think someone who really enjoys more horror (and can stomach more gore) would love this! I’d totally recommend to a horror fan, but it’s not smart for me to keep reading it.

I'm so glad I didn't leave Nick Cutter behind after reading "The Deep" because this was fantastic! There is still animal cruelty and death that was hard for me to read, but it was more necessary to the story as a whole.
It definitely didn't come off as being nearly as gratuitous as it was in "The Deep."

The descriptions are vivid and the world-building is amazing, I highly recommend "The Troop!"

Too unsettling, maybe because all the bad stuff was all happening to children. The science part was intriguing, however I couldn't stomach the boys portions, especially when they started turning on each other.
