The cliffhanger at the end is frustrating, but I loved the build up and watching Sophie grow.

What an incredible read. As someone whose grown up with this series as my reading pillar. Shannon Messenger as my idol. Sophie as my hero. Keefe as my school girl crush…
I will admit the beginning is a bit of a drag. (First 250pg or so, but it’s typical Shannon/Sophie insecurities and to be fair it’s been kind of 3 years since we’ve had a lot of that.) The whole “I’m not the scared little girl I used to be” stuff. But then the ball drops and crap hits the fan.
Oh my Lord.
The moment we’ve all been waiting for finally happens and I can safely say I’m pleased.
I’m not ready for this series to be over.

I love kotlc but book 9 suffers from bad pacing and inaccurate character portrayals among other things:
I never really liked sokeefe and honestly I don’t think they actually make sense and the way Sophie ,after years of not being able to understand her feelings, all of a sudden when it comes to this book is able to understand her feelings and is head over heels for Keefe. It really didn’t make sense and was very out of character for her.
Most of this super long book was filled with fluff and the plot only began in the last 70 pages and mind you this is like 800 pages. In the book Sophie told forkle multiple times about how they were doing nothing while the Neverseen were out there “plotting and scheming” which to me is a meta reference to how the actual plot was not moving, they spent soo many pages on useless things that did not contribute to the book in anyway and things that could have been done in a short amount of time taking 300 pages.
I saw people on Reddit saying that the book seemed incomplete and that it doesn’t work well as a standalone. I definitely agree and I’m a bit confused if Shannon even knew where she was going with the plot, because it does not seem like the previous books were setting up Lady Gisela and keefe drama
The end was super confusing because everything in the last 70 pages is just like back to back plot twists and revelations, and it all happens so quickly. It could have been paced way better, so it didn’t just feel like an info dump. I did enjoy some scenes like them going back to foxfire, some of the character moments and parts of the last few chapters ( not chapter 42 L sokeefe W Fitz) but other than that the only things that are holding up the book from a 2 stars is the fact that (A) it is kotlc and B) I ate it up, regardless of how badsome parts were.
In conclusion its a mediocre instalment ,in a really good series, which could have been written way better
And yah, I’ll be here waiting for book 10 which is taking forever btw.
*also side note everyone is dumb for not praising Sophie for burning the warehouse
