This book is absolutely delightful. While this may be a book aimed at middle schoolers, I've found myself thinking about it since I read it.
This was a largely plot-driven book that tells the story of a 6th grader and her family and close friends. She's smart and curious. It's really a great story about growing up, money troubles, family, and chosen family.

Hella good middle-grade novel set in the 1970s. The book reminded me a bit of A Wrinkle in Time (for obvious reasons once you read the book), The Westing Game, and The Mixed-up Files of Basil E. Frankweiler, both in writing style and in various plot points. Pretty complex for a juvenile novel, but most kids will get it.

Good book if you read this as a 6th grader who loves a Wrinkle in Time. Sandwiches, a laughing man and notes.
