This book came straight from the psych thriller category, with a jacket blurb that was incredibly intriguing. Unfortunately, after turning the final page and closing the cover, I am to unequivocally state that this was neither a thriller nor intriguing. Instead, this tome was flat and slow, featured an entire cast of wholly unlikable characters and held no secrets, surprises or twists to make it worth finishing the read. It was average in every sense of the word. Seriously. I wouldn’t bother.

This book is unreadable. terrible plot, ridiculous characters. Chapters alternate between 4 characters and I cannot distinguish the voice for each and have to keep flipping back to see which character is speaking. Only 25% in but I won’t waste any more time on this book.

“All happy families are like one another; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” - Leo Tolstoy

This is a slow burn of a psychological thriller but it is also intriguing and gripping. The Other Couple was very well written and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Like many books, it was a bit of a slow start but it picked up quickly after that and I was able to read it easily in a couple of sittings. I really liked the way the characters were fleshed out and not all is what it seems on the surface.

The whole book felt very tense, and somewhat mental overload when all the plot lines finish together. In the back of my mind I was guessing what might happen and even though I was right in some ways I was unexpectedly surprised in others. In my eyes this is what makes a great read and a great author and also the fact that after a few chapters in I was reading at a pace that had me up way past my bedtime. Needless to say I really enjoyed reading this book and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys suspenseful stories.

Disclousure:
Thank you NetGalley, Cathryn Grant and Inkubator Books for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an impartial review; all opinions are my own.

Unfortunately, this book just did not do it for me. The writing felt extremely pedestrian. The idea was great and I enjoyed some of the character interactions but it seemed the author didn't quite know where to go with it. Half of it was super unbelievable and the other half was super boring for me. If it hadn't been so short and I hadn't received it to review, I probably would've DNF'd it.

First of all, the characters suck. Maggie and Joe were so over-the-top and Brad and Skye were BORING. Just basically puppets for the plot even though they were alone together half the time. Literally nothing interesting ever happens when they're together. I needed one of them to have a secret or to also be hiding something juicy, otherwise what's the point of us having every single person's point of view? This may have been a 3 star if the narration was just 3rd person without everyone's point of view.

Then, the ending. Actually, I should say, "What ending?" It was like... and they lived happily ever after :) I was so mad. I would've been more satisfied if the characters in the end had been in on it together the whole time or something like that. I was missing spice in this novel, everything was so bland!

I hate leaving bad reviews, but if you like thrillers.... skip this one.

Thank you to the publisher & NetGalley for an advance reader's copy in exchange for an honest review.

Page turner

I liked the story. It was a page turner for me except that the vacation seemed loooooonger than 10 days. I liked that I had no idea what was coming next so I kept on reading. I liked the twist but I did not like the ending. I have no love for the couple in the end.

Maggie and Brad are vacationing in Lake Tahoe when they run into another couple, Joe and Skye. After some drinks and chit chat, Maggie invites the couple back to their rental house because of how well everyone seems to get along.
However, Joe and Skye are not just wanting some couple friends, they’re con artists who figured that Maggie and Brad were perfect targets.
After spending some time with Maggie and Brad, they learn that Maggie has a secret, a secret that could make them money if they play their cards right.
However, this vacation is not going to go to plan and not all of them will be able to leave.

I have never hated four characters more than Brad Maggie, Joe, and Skye. They have no real character development and all of them feel so flat and not fleshed out.
I went into this thinking I was going to get a thriller, instead I got a very boring and underwhelming story.
Nothing felt surprising or shocking, it was just so generic and predictable. Even the “plot twists” weren’t that exciting or draw dropping.
The ending was super super annoying in my opinion, it made me laugh because I was so disappointed by how everything concluded and I was just happy to have it end.
I’m glad this was a kindle unlimited story because I would have been very upset if I had actually bought this with my money.

As a fan of thrillers this one hooked me fast and hard. It was really well written with twists and turns, even if the end did feel a bit disappointing. Ending or not, I’ll definitely be reading more from Cathryn!
