Appropriate for ages 2 to 8, this picture book depicts the glories of an afternoon two siblings spend with their puppy. The story is good, simple and fun, but the art—oh, the art is magnificent. Kadir Nelson is simply the best artist working in children's literature, and his pictures are breathtakingly beautiful.

The kids love any books with cats and dogs, so this was an obvious choice.

Too simple for my taste. Might be better for a younger child, and perhaps a dog-lover.

Dex's absolute favorite at the moment. It was one of the first books I bought when I found out I was pregnant so I love the fact that he has fallen in love with it!

How do you rate a book when the words do nothing for you but the illustrations deserve 5 stars?!

First off, the pictures were cute, but the style was a bit... off? I don't know. Something about the details seemed wrong, like it was meant for older eyes (not sexually, etc., just... I don't know. Like adult news magazine picture style, but aimed at kids). Maybe I'm getting too used to a certain kind of children's illustration styles (I have been reading a lot of titles from barefoot books, lately).

The text was lacking, mostly repeating "please" and "puppy" in various forms. Joe wasn't even very interested in it.
