I didn't love this as much as I'd hoped I would, being that it's such a classic. The design of the society is fantastic and the commentary on ideas of humanity are done well. Specifically how the rarity of animals turns into an a sort of societal fetish was interweaved throughout in really interesting ways. Ultimately the characters weren't terribly compelling. Rick had some development and inner torment, but I couldn't get myself to care about him all that much. That was somewhat the same in Philip K. Dick's [b:Ubik|22590|Ubik|Philip K. Dick|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1327995569s/22590.jpg|62929], which I recall enjoying more, but that book also had a more creative sci-fi element.
I can say for sure that when I watched Blade Runner for the first time I can really remember after reading this book, the movie bored me. Gone was the mysterious religion, background commentator in Buster Friendly, and the role of animals as status symbols. Plus the 80's hair was bananas.

'And I finally found a setting for despair... So I put it on my schedule for twice a month; I think that's a reasonable amount of time to feel hopeless about everything.'
This is a novel both dystopian and sardonic. In a world where nearly all non-human animal life has been eradicated, humanity disappointingly continues to value animals purely as commodities, although their rarity now makes them status symbols, leading to a ridiculous market for life-like robotic goats and ostriches. This aspect of the plot was far more interesting to me than the android-hunting that became 'Blade Runner'. Although I prefer PKD's 'A Scanner Darkly', I still enjoyed it, reading it perhaps too quickly. It deserves a second read.
It's very 'male gaze-y' (lots of mentions of 'small high breasts'), so I couldn't give it 5*.

It was pretty good, and there were some interesting new concepts that were so interesting.
But then there were all the references to women's breasts. Why do writers from this time period always talk about women's breasts? Like women are just blank slate cardboard cut-outs with boobs who are only there to fulfill the fantasies of the author?
The breasts Dick mentions in this book are always small. At one point he goes on to describe an android specifically as adolescent looking with tiny breasts.....so...like....really young adolescent? And Rick is sexually attracted to her and he sleeps with her. And it was really disturbing and uncomfortable to read. Uhm. That's kind of not ok.
Just before he's got with this android he was groping his wife without her permission.
And it was all just so unsavoury. It really soured what was a very interesting story.

First off, I've never seen Blade Runner, so I had no basis of enjoyment for this book. Apparently it's a "the movie was better" situation. But the book alone was fantastic and I liked it a lot. I found myself wondering throughout the entire thing who was an android and who was a human. Much better than The Man in the High Castle and a good book all around.
