This book was so well done, and about a place I had no idea about. Excellent art.

This is a beautiful book. It's too bad that the bookstore isn't still around today. But this book stands as a lovely, thoughtful reminder of a place that, like the Library of Alexandria, would ideally still be around for the human species to study and learn from.

A picture book story of what was apparently and absolutely phenomenal bookstore now long gone. The art is not quite to my usual taste, but it's really well done - kind of painting takes on pseudo phot o realistic - moody but kind of beautiful and adds much to the text. The text is well written. A lot of words for a picture book, but still not too many. A pretty good historical note as well. It's been awhile since I chased down every bookstore everywhere I could fine. Having no real room for more books takes out some of the desire. But book places are still places, and this one seemed to be a part of history as well.

A lesser known story of that features strong Black men. Love the emphasis on learning and reading.

A beautiful and fascinating look inside Harlem during the Civil Rights movement. A must-read for any teacher or student exploring this time in American history.

The Book Itch: Freedom, Truth & Harlem’s Greatest Bookstore by Vaunda Micheaux Nelson tells the true story of how the National Memorial African Bookstore came to be. The narrator, Louie, tells the story of how his father, Lewis Michaux Sr. opened the bookstore. He did it so that people would be able to read, talk and learn from books and each other. Read The Book Itch: Freedom, Truth & Harlem’s Greatest Bookstore by Vaunda Micheaux Nelson to find out how one very special bookstore changed lives.
