I wanted to love this book. I wanted it to change the way I looked at steampunk literature, because I haven't been enjoying it that much. I expected so much from this book, and it really let me down.
After having quite a few years of Japanese language classes and a few Asian history classes under my belt, I was so excited at the prospect of Japanese Steampunk. So naturally, I finally ordered a copy of this book so I could fuel said excitement. Immediately, the way the Japanese language was used turned me off. Even if you're going to create an alternate Japan instead of an alternate timeline for the country itself, at least give the culture the respect it deserves.
By the end of this book, I was extremely annoyed. It seemed like it had been written by some crazed otaku who learned everything they knew from a little bit of anime and just took bits and pieces of what they liked and stuck it all together.
It could have been brilliant. Sadly, it wasn't.

2.5 rounding down.
When will I learn my lesson and just avoid books about ~aZn people~ written by white dudes who either fetishize or don't know how to research?

Y’all I had my doubts but this book was GOOD. The beginning was difficult for me to get through since there was so much description and world building but it is so worth it. Once this world sucks you in, it gets you good.
This was such a unique world. I loved these characters and don’t even get me started on the star that is Buruu

MARAVILLA.

Reason:
Dense descriptions. Like two lines of dialogue for each three pages of absolutely pointless descriptions. Also, I read an interview with the author and he said he doesn't like happy endings. If I'd known that, I never would have tried this book.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book; the characters had depth and the plot, while not original, moved quickly enough to hold my interest. I enjoyed the world building and the steampunk/fantasy amalgamation that the author was going for. The pacing was a little slow with the end coming too abruptly. There were a few moments in the book that were left out and brushed over that I felt were important and would have liked to see. As a main character Yukiko was likable and her relationship with the arashitora Buruu kept me reading. That and I am a sucker for father/daughter stories.
That is not to say that this novel doesn’t have issues. The “traditional“ Japanese culture that this book borrows from seemed to be drawn from Wikipedia and anime; little of the complex culture of Japan shone through. However, as this is a fantasy series and is only influenced by Japan and other Asian cultures not set in them, plus the authors first novel, I am giving the benefit of the doubt and hope the rest of the series improves.
The only other complaint I have about this book is that the author doesn’t always use complete sentences which really throws off the flow of the story when reading. For example: “Stinking of open graves and burning hair, skin of polished midnight blue, eyes like funeral candles bathed the forest with guttering light.” It’s nit picky of me, but when describing something it is best to have a clear sentence subject. Overall the writing style was fine but like I said, it ruins the flow of the story.
If you are looking for a book to keep you entertained, that is a bit different from the traditional Eurocentric fantasy, I would say this book is definitely worth a read.

I must say, from the very beginning I was sucked into this crazy phenomenal story. Being plunged into this whole fantastical Japanese steampunk world full of slaying of demons, conversing with beautiful proud creatures of legend, of finding one’s true place in the world and learning that there are things in life worth sacrificing for. Great things. I love love love all the characters in this amazing story! I can’t wait to read the next book and I can’t recommend this book highly enough!! What a great read.
