Ross's impending trial and threat of imprisonment, along with mounting debts, scheming rivals and the disconnect between himself and Demelza while dealing with loss, bring testing times for the Poldarks. And, the question of who betrayed Ross does get answered and puts more spanners in the works.

There are a couple of new characters and one flirtatious lady makes the most of Dr. Dwight Enys' gullible nature as far as women are concerned. He's a great character but I wish he'd grow a spine and get himself a decent partner too. Ah well. Still, once again, it is drunken Jud that had me laughing aloud. He's a character you shouldn't like but he's involved in some of the best scenes. Dark humour at it's finest and Jud's scene stealing is sterling this time!

Historical fiction isn't usually my bag yet I'm loving this saga and it may make me take a chance on trying more historical fiction in future.

I really love this series, and I think I'm going to read them all before I watch another episode of the really wonderful TV series. The thing is, the TV show gives away too much of plot development in the books -- while seeing it all play out on TV after you've read the books is just fine. Once again, I love Graham's vivid description, great ear for dialect, strong characters, and fascinating story line. Plus each time I read one of these books I learn more about Cornwall and copper mining and 18th century life. As usual, I find at the end of this book (the third) I am on tenterhooks to see what happens next, too. I can't believe it took me so many decades to find this series, but thanks, TV!

I preferred this Poldark book to the last one I read but so far none have been as good as the first one for me. As the series goes on it is getting more drama which I don't love. I think Demelza is a wonderful character but Ross drives me crazy with his love for awful Elizabeth and the Warleggan feud is ridiculous.

"Do you think that Ross is settled down after all his trouble?"

"I always feel," Dwight said, "That Ross is like a volcano. He may be quiet forever - or erupt tomorrow."

A very good summary of Ross's character!

This is the third book in a row in this series, & once again it is a 5★ read for me. Once again the book is a mixture of romance, adventure, humour (in the most unexpected places) & Ross's prickly, difficult character.

& the good doctor (Dwight Enys) looks to be once again heading for an unsuitable romance. I can't wait to start Vol 4.

One thing that baffles me. This book was originally titled Venture Once More - a far better title than Jeremy Poldark, given that
SpoilerJeremy doesn't make his appearance until the end of the book.

Surprisingly I enjoyed this book better than the second in the series, Demelza. I found the new perspective of Dr Enys very refreshing but also keeping within the entire plot of Ross' story. Ross as always is a difficult character but he has a lot to offer within his own and external conflicts. My only wish is that there had been a bit more of Elizabeth in this book, but I suppose it was Caroline's time to peak the reader's interest--she is, after all, a fascinating and well-written character.
