disturbingly boring. it was just missing so much of that potential essence it could have, but it was not a sapphic gore horror book, it was just absolutely bland.

it could have had potential but it was lackluster. there are many good books that use the email/text format that LaRocca used and executed it well, but this one was too flat, uninteresting. it tried to be interesting with the worm and horrible flirts, but even as a short story, it should have had depth in these characters.

100 pages wasted on something with no substance. wasted potential and it was something i was looking forward to reading for YEARS. and it's such a disappointment.

don't bother reading this if you don't want to waste your time!

the climax of this all was just --------

there was plot but again, the execution will surely disappoint you. you'd think because the cover was pretty that it would have anything to do with the story, but apparently not.

just some horny man author who wrote a poorly written sapphic book that has no ways of understanding true manipulation in a relationship. either that or he learned his lesson after finding a reddit user to form a dominant-submissive relationship with.

I was deeply annoyed the whole time, but I deserved it for taking book recommendations from TikTok.

Ok ok I’ve sat with this book for a while and talked extensively with friends and feel like my thoughts are together. This book truly was shocking and deeply sad. It was a quick punch to the gut and needs to be consumed in one sitting.

Detailed recap so avoid unless you’ve already read:
Things have gotten worse since we last spoke is the story of a lonely woman who finds companionship in an online chat room. Our main character connects with Zoe. Quickly finding herself financially dependent on her new, anonymous friend. Told completely though IMs and emails, this novella explores how desperation can lead a human to commit heinous acts in pursuit of acceptance.

More spoilers below :
This book does not lack any gore or graphic scenes. The hardest to read had to be the little christ vignette which detailed the gruesome events of a teenager violently crucifying his infant brother. The worst thing I think I’ve ever read in my life has to be the eating and hosting of the tapeworm. In a final attempt at motherhood, our main character willingly consumes a parasitic tapeworm. She carries it to term in a placebo pregnancy to simulate carrying life and giving her life purpose.

I REALLY wanted to like this book but it ended up feeling super shallow. First of all it rubs me the wrong way having a cis man write about the trauma/mental illness of a lesbian couple. If the characters were given more personality or development it might have worked better but it ended up just pushing the idea that lesbians are damaged/crazy. On another note Agnes and Zoe's writing style were practically identical which is unrealistic and I'm not sure if there was a reason for this.

THIS IS SUCH A GREAT BOOK !!

A slow & disturbing descent into madness.

Greatly exposes the way loneliness can break someone’s mind & make them completely give up on themselves just for an illusion of happiness and affection.

She didn’t care about how toxic and deeply harmful their relationship was as long as she felt loved. She was in utter despair to receive love.

Sickening psychological horror, 5/5 would recommend.
