An excellent book of suspense and political intrigue. This is such a breath of fresh air after The Pirate King. All of the characters are interesting, the little-known history is fascinating and King manages to weave a great fictional story in among all that history.

Sometimes the attention to setting detail can slow things down a bit, but it was nice to feel like I was actually there in Morocco as well.

A step up from Pirate King...and yet still so slow that the majority of action came too late in the book for me to see why the first half was such a creep. I read the audiobook and I thought I had loads left, being in the middle of the final expositions...imagine my surprise when there was just twenty minutes. This could have been balanced differently I think; we never even get any follow up about the film!

I'm not totally clear on the political scheming that went into this plot, but it was a good time and high stakes. I think Holmes and Russell spend more time together on page in this than in many other books.

1924 Morocco. Starts with Russell's amnesia.

Next in the Mary Russell series. This one was better than the last one but still a bit predictable. Mary has amnesia, Holmes has to find her, the pair thwart an assassination attempt, the end. But I will continue to read the series because I love these two characters!

Normally a huge Russell fan, this book was a disappointment not to be matched. Instead of taking my time and devouring each delicious page, I found myself falling back in my college skill of speed reading. Nothing but political rambling for chapters on end, I found it dry and withered.

Another good Mary Russell/Sherlock Holmes mystery. It is a continuation of The Pirate King but I liked this one better. If you're going to read the series, it is good to start at the beginning with The Beekeepers Apprentice. Very clever.

This one was probably better than Pirate King, but i found it got bogged down in historical details.
