If I didn't know any better, I feel like The Wallflower Wager is a close copy to this one (even though I like it better). Give me sunshine/grump trope all day long.
Trigger Warnings: mentions of cheating (not between H/h), misogynistic language, death of parents, physical assault, and mention of poisoning

It was an alright romance. Nothing in particular unique. But was all in all a fun read.

I can not overstate how little plot there is in this book. Legitimately the only thing happening for 80% of this romance is just "she was raised in a convent and now they're married so how do they navigate learning how to sleep together" and hijinks and shenanigans from that. BUT, I had so much fun lol there are a few really cringey moments but it was just so dumb and funny I just had a blast.

I could totally see how this hero would not work for most people though and that is totally fair. He's unreasonable and overly jealous and stubborn for the vast majority of the romance but I just found the whole thing so lighthearted and charming that it ended up kind of working for me! Idk!!! it was fun!!

Audiobook : Narrator India Baldwin was so great.

The first five hours were really good, 4.5 star good. For the first time in a long time I found myself laughing aloud to many of the scenarios- (the consummation, cucumbers, dressing horses, etc). Unlike many others, I actually found Rosamund’s naïveté believable, she grew up with Nuns after all; or at least understandable. There are plenty of books with... well, frankly, dumb female leads despite schooling and traveling the world- this wasn’t that.

Why only 3 stars? :
1) The male lead was the literal worst. Jealous, overbearing, and with so little character development there was nothing to even like / cushion the typical ‘well this is how all men were back then’ justifications. Sorry you were cheated on. Doesn’t mean you get to hate everything and everyone and just be a jerk and have readers like you. He just sucked. I didn’t root for him.

For the most part I enjoyed this book. Some parts were a bit silly but the overall plot was good. The mystery over who was trying to kill or injure the two main characters had a good finality to it.

I might have read Always in the first year or two of reading romance novels but that was half my life ago so I'm truly not certain. It's a cute little story for the most part, although I did find it somewhat problematic, mostly because the hero is honestly an asshole. I still enjoyed the ride though, and I was pleasantly surprised at how much more attention to historical detail I noticed in this one compared to Sands' other historical romances. Regardless, this is a mostly fun and sweet story that I don't regret reading despite its issues. It wouldn't be the first I would recommend from the author (far from it) but I wouldn't recommend against it or anything.

3.5 stars. A light hearted read. It was easy to figure out who the real villain was too. I also enjoyed that this book didn’t end with her being pregnant, which is what usually happens in books of this time. I like that they get to just enjoy each other.

DNF: the first half was so un charming, I could not go on. Not sure why I thought I could tolerate a book where the whole premise at the beginning is Eleanor of Aquitaine is a shrew!

Heroine was dull and selfish, hero was dull and mean and they barely talk to each other! despite being together the whole time.
