I'm not finished yet, but I'm giving this five stars ahead of time because it has held my focused attention and interest through the middle of the story, which is very unusual at the moment. The rating will only change if the ending is disappointing.
I did end up removing a star because I reserve five stars for books I would happily consider reading again. Some of the content that was uncomfortable for me personally has greatly reduced the probability that would ever happen. Interesting story, though.

A rip-roaring good story with an unexpected driving force, The Anomaly was written in French, translated into English and published in November, 2021.
The multiple failures of U.S. intelligence and security on 9/11 led to consultations with math professors at MIT, who were asked to draft protocols for every conceivable threat. Statistical math usually starts with a coin toss, repeated a zillion times over. The math experts even come up with a formula for the unlikely circumstance of a coin coming to rest on its edge! The U.S. then asks, "What about any circumstances you may NOT have considered?" The geeks respond by creating Protocol 42--a catch-all containing no recommendations whatsoever, because they figured they'd effectively covered all possible scenarios.
But what if the flipped coin goes up, as it should, but never comes down again? What THEN? Hence, the anomaly. Having been a joke from its inception, Protocol 42 offers no solutions.
Unfortunately, Le Tellier couldn't come up with any solutions, either, and his book sadly just peters out--LITERALLY. Hence, 3 stars instead of the 4 I had projected before I'd quite finished. I couldn't have fathomed he would just drop it like that. Too bad.

Really good book, been awhile since I read a mystery like this. If there were suddenly two of you (not twins) how would that affect your life? How would it affect those around you? Those you don't even know? Wow

I don't tend to like books that leave me with more questions than answers. This one almost more than most, especially when it comes to the philosophical and religious. I do believe however that I will contemplate more than most I've read recently.
