This was really thought provoking. More than anything, it reflects, explores and criticizes our relationship with God - and that is quite an eternal question that we often spend our lives on. What/Who is God. And what isn't.
I loved the concept on which the book is based, and I loved the core of Peri's character. Uncertainty.
The narration is fluid, and Peri's upbringing - the contrast between Selma and Mensur was one of the elements I enjoyed the most. My gripe was that somehow, the story got lost in its themes. With all the enigma that was promised with Azur, I found it lacking and the professor fell short of my expectations. I did like the unusual mix of Shirin, Mona and Peri.
The essence was captured rightly enough by the book and our complex equation with love, faith, belief and culture was explored meaningfully. The story was weak, but the themes were spectacular.

Elif Shafak is one of my favorite authors but this book for me was a big disappointing. The book is very heavy on spiritualism and difficult to read especially the parts of Professor Azur. I kept waiting for that big turn or twist to come and found the book extremely predictable. The problem is with Peri the central character too much emphasis on her and while I get it she is a confused soul it just gets on your nerves. The after effects of the scandal especially on Mona another important character are not explained. It was difficult to finish this book personally I wouldn't recommend reading this if you're a true Shafak fan as it will only lead to disappointment.
