I read the first book in the series and I was hooked. I wanted to know more about Piper and wanted to see her get her happy ending. To see how the author handled grief was amazing and beautiful. She really could have gone the easy way however, she went the way it really mattered and wow it was beautiful. Piper's growth from the beginning of the series was amazing and this book is great for that alone.

Katie writes grief and overcoming grief in a way that makes it relatable. These books all have addiction, and talk on page about mental health and I really enjoy the representation as it is something that we are all dealing with.

Their dynamic made me laugh multiple times. I loved their back-and-forth banter a lot and I had such a hard time putting the book down.
I had to use Google translate to understand some of the Spanish but I did not mind that I had to keep stepping away from the book for that. I loved ‘hearing’ Leo speak in Spanish and talking to Piper in his ‘Spanglish’.
I saw so much of myself in Piper and some of the words I read hit very close to home. I didn’t know I needed to read some of the things that were in there, but every word I read in regard to Piper’s grief made me feel so deeply, and I am so glad I got to read her story.
I felt so much pain going through the book and there were multiple moments that I had tears streaming down my face.
I loved most of the side characters, and the way they formed a support system for each of the characters beautiful.
I wish I could read it again for the first time.

Thank you Katie for the ARC!

It's been a while since I read a college romance story, and let me tell you, this didn't really feel like one either. And that's a great thing!
Piper and Leo have been hating each other since a faithful Spanish class back in high school. She only started her act as the perfect people pleaser and he poked a hole in her act. Years later, after a jaw-dropping truth bomb in the form of a karaoke show their paths cross in an inevitable way.
I adored Piper and Leo's banter! They truly-truly were on the opposite side of the spectrum when it came to 'people-ing', expressing their true feelings and overall personalities. But we all know, chemistry and passion could bubble up to the surface even in these circumstances - the opposites attract trope was in full force!

I adored how Katie approached different microtropes and storylines. There were some emotionally heavy hitter aspects I did not expect just judging by the cover. My personal favourites were how grief was approached in the most human way - it topples over you out of nowhere but other days you live with it like a constant but non issue. I appreciated the side story about power imbalance in academia!
And most importantly I felt connected to the main characters as their struggles and hopes mirrored some of my own. I feel like almost every woman on the planet could relate to Piper's willingness to put on a brave face and weather the emotional storm, how we learn to pretend and lean into the good girl act just to make our life easier.
I think we could all feel lost, just like Leo, regarding trying to balance family life and work, feeling the pressure to perform at the top and not feel guilty about missing out.
On a lighter note, if you're not into smutty, well written books, this one's definitely not for you! I enjoyed the power change during romantic and everyday scenes between the pair, loved the lack of third act breakup, and smiled at certain back and forths between the main characters.
The Ones We Hate is available on KU!
