This has all the makings of a great Doctor Who story but somehow the pieces never quite come together. The resolution is quite disappointing, but the monsters never felt like that great a threat.
It didn't help that the American accent really was a bit naff haha "Look out Nisser!"

The Land of the Dead takes the Fifth Doctor, but this time with Nyssa, to contemporary Alaska besieged by creatures from the Permian era. I would defend Nyssa against the likes of The Guardian who put her far down the list of companions, but Sarah Sutton is not especially outstanding here. Davison, however, is, and has a brilliant rapport with guest actor Lucy Campbell, whose performance here is memorable but appears to have done almost no other acting work apart from a bit part in another Stephen Cole Big Finish audio. Also the story is surprisingly good, with the archaeological delvings of the scientific researchers mirrored in the psychological delvings of the two main male characters into the circumstances of the tragic accident involving their fathers from decades before. The two actors slightly struggle to bring it off but it kept my attention.

Although Peter Davidson was my first doctor I'm not enjoying his audio dramas much. I don't know what it is about them, maybe I.m not much of a audio book person. The story was bland, the other characters all unlikeable and the only plus to it really was that it was short.

This story had a lot of really cool ideas but wasted misty of them in favor of arguing thinly disguised as character drama. The ideas -- including a crazy explanation for the Permian Extinction - are really cool though, so despite annoyances it gets three stars.

5th Doctor, Nyssa - This is a real shame. So much about this story SOUNDS like a good idea. A seemingly refreshed Peter Davison back in the role again with his favorite companion, Nyssa. An ominous, barely seen, Lovecraftian-like threat in a "The Thing"-like atmosphere. A steady rising danger. A broad moral theme... This all sounds like the best of Doctor Who to me. It just doesn't work, though. A story like this should be this long to develop the creeping menace of it all, but that also implies, you know, some narrative to fill in that menace-building length. Sadly, by the time it all erupts, you've probably stopped caring. But don't count him out, the 5th Doctor has some real triumphs coming.

This was a decent story. The story itself was fairly interesting--a few boring-ish bits but for the most part intriguing. The main actors are brilliant as always, as is the actress who plays Monica--her lines are also especially funny. However, the American accents of some of the other characters slipped into English accents, which was distracting. The Native American characters were kind of racist, too. It's worth a listen, but it's hardly the best audio drama out there.
