I was disgusted by the blatant antisemitism in the very first chapter and almost didn't continue listening. I borrowed an ebook and I was happy to see that those references had been edited out.

I did really enjoy this book and it's my first Agatha Christie read! The queen of mystery! This was straight and to the point, given it was less than 300 pages, and I ate it up. It was super fast-paced and built up the suspense whilst covering a lot of ground despite the small page count.

I liked the use of the poem as a quick starter for this novel and I found myself flipping back and forth to see how which character would meet their demise to fit with the stanza. While I didn't care for any of the characters really given their old-fashioned selves (and quite frankly their selfishness and frankness), I think the exploration of human nature and what is good vs. evil was super interesting and the character interactions were also fascinating to explore up until the end. I also loved reading and picking up on classic mystery tropes that I see in much of the media I consume today. I think I'll enjoy reading Christie's other books more with Hercule Poirot more, only because it will give me a character to root for and rally for (like I said, I didn't really connect with any of the characters here).

I will say, Ms. Christie is a little anti-semitic... it was on like page six y'all, like right off the bat. I was reading a pretty old version and her books were written throughout the 1900s (this one in 1939) and I actually looked it up - some of her books have been edited to remove offensive references to Jews, which is good. It seems like based on autobiographical research, Christie herself came to realize what she wrote was wrong, so take that with a grain of salt I guess. It was pretty off-putting, especially at the start to read about a main character referring to another as "that Jew" or saying things like of course he would do that, he's a Jew, etc. So I do think the reader should be aware of that before reading or venturing into Christie's works.

I somehow managed to completely avoid spoiling this classic and was absolutely wrong about who the murderer was. Hats off to Ms. Christie!

Maybe I just like being a HATER, but if you have to tack on things to explain the ending maybe you're trying to do too much??? (This is a comment directed at a celebrated mystery writer who died in 1976)

ANYWAY I guess I don't read mysteries and find it wild that someone could plan something so convoluted and have NOTHING go wrong. Alas, I am reading this in the post-postmodern era... THINGS FALL APART, THE CENTER DOES NOT HOLD, etc.... (Though anyone who is following that deep cut may note that the poem is from 1920, and the novel from 1958... However: POST-POSTmodern? POSTwar? POSTcolonial? SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT....!)

ANYWAY AGAIN!! What do I know!! I'm just a lady who loves thrillers that don't give answers!!! If you also found the ending ridiculous, may I suggest to you the 2002 movie "Memories of Murder"--a thriller that won't tell you anything, but will make you sound cool in front of people who went to film school!!

Oh also, wow the antisemitism was unexpected and really just right there at the beginning of the book for everyone to see. (Bonus, did you know this book used to be called Ten Little Indians? And before that something even MORE racist??) ((In fact, it was SO racist that the publisher had the sense to change it for the American release in 1940! Fun!))

The first detective story I ever read was Anthony Horowitz's I Know What You Did Last Wednesday, which directly spoofs the plot of this novel, so it was inevitable that And Then There Were None would hold a special place in my heart. This is one of Christie's darker, more misanthropic novels, lacking the familiar comforting presence of Poirot or Marple. Ten strangers, each with a guilty conscience, trapped on an island, with an unknown killer picking them off one at a time. It's the ultimate locked room mystery, and there's no escape, as the tension, paranoia, and suspicion all swell to an unforgettable crescendo.
