Bree Beckham is living on Little Bridge Island and happy to be. She's away from all the fuss and away from her famous mum. When a hurricane hits the island she is unprepared for what this will mean and for what will happen when she gets together with her boss's sexy nephew, Drew Hartwell to feed the animals left behind.
But can they work with their attraction or is it just a fling.

Fun light read with two characters who spark well and Meg Cabot's sarcasm drips off the page. I enjoyed it.

Meg Cabot always makes easy but entertaining reads. I had accidentally read the 3rd book of the series first, so wanted to go back to the first two. Of the three, I think this one is my favorite so far.

I hesitated to read this because of the widely disparate reviews. People seem to either love it or hate it. When I discovered it on Libby, I figured it was worth trying since it was free.

Happily, I enjoyed it quite a bit. I liked Bree a lot. Drew was a little harder to 'get' - he's portrayed as an ex-player who loves dogs. Unfortunately we really don't get to know him beyond that.

There are a lot of trigger warnings in other reviews about animal cruelty. I was happy to discover that there was less than I expected from reading the warnings. A jerk kicks a dog twice in a bar, and the dog is promptly rescued. People leave their pets behind in the hurricane for a variety of reasons, and although a few are touch-and-go for a short time, all are fine in the end.

Cover: Cute. Love the Border Collie!
Narrator: Piper Goodeve did a really nice job.
Hogwarts Sorting Hat: I think Bree is a Hufflepuff with some Gryffindor tendencies. We're not given enough information about Drew to sort him.

Themes: Florida Keys, hurricane, animal rescue, family, cafe

I needed a silly audiobook to distract me on a stressful flight and this was…. Definitely silly? At first I thought it was making me cringe because I’m not used to audiobooks, but after a while I realized that it was just simply not a good book. I am from a place with a lot of hurricanes, so that may have been part of it. I thought it could be fun to see the “hurricane party” vibe that we do often have down here, but that’s typically for a small storm when no one really bothers to evacuate. It was deeply irritating to listen to this woman dig in and adamantly refuse to evacuate because she… wanted to seem like a cool local? Wanted to prove her mommy wrong? The gender dynamics felt gross and weird, and it was hard to root for the main characters to get together because they were just giving nothing. The final straw for me was when she
takes out a gun and threatens to kill a man??? And goes so far as to fire a warning shot??? And then it was treated as this empowering moment when in reality it was just concerning. Obviously the man in question did something fucked up to her, but it felt like the author intentionally made that situation less graphic and traumatic than it could have been, but then had the main character threaten to murder the perpetrator?
Truly just weird and bad vibes all around.

Let's just start this off right!

I LOVED THIS BOOK!

It had me from the beginning and every page after that. The way she developed her characters over the course of the novel was great. Additionally, the vulnerability the characters felt towards not only themselves but to the people and animals around them was so realistic.

Bree is a go-getter and a strong, independent young woman. She accepts help from others, but she also a force on her own. She takes help yes, and that itself is a skill one has to learn, but she doesn't completely rely on anyone for everything. She was empowering to read, and that was refreshing!

Both sexual assault and animal abuse were brought up in this book, and I felt that they were both handled well. They were not made to be the centre focus of the novel and they were not dragged out. The way this was brought up and dealt with was positive with me because it is important that these topics are discussed in order to bring awareness. While at the same time they didn't take anything away from the novel, only adding to it.

On that note, I will say the one problem I had with this story was the particular way Bree approached her assaulter, Kyle. I am not one for violence and I thought that whole scene could've been handled better given the weight of it. There are other ways she could've confronted him, and I would've preferred to read a different option than the one she chose.

Overall - Well done Meg Cabot!

This was the first book of hers that I have read, and I can assure you it won't be the last. Her style of writing is easy to follow along to and so very easy to get sucked into. I finished this book in about 2 days, and I will definitely be reading it again in the future.
